Goodbye Gramps...

My lolo (grandpa), my mom's dad, passed away last week. It was sad but I guess we already accepted the fact that he's going anytime. I believe he's 85.

I didn't have that much memories with my gramps. The first time I met him was when I was about 6 years old. He and my lola (grandma) left my mom and her younger siblings when they were little to their relatives. They had gone their separate ways and decided they both didn't want anything to do with my mom and her 2 younger sisters. My mom didn't see him until after 25 years, if I estimated it correctly.

I remembered I used to cry a lot whenever my mom tell her stories how she became the "mom & dad" to her siblings at a young age... how their relatives mistreated them... and how she had to sell vegetables to buy herself a pair of slippers to use for school when she was a kid. It was really sad. Kind of a tele-novela, really! I even think it could pass for an episode of "Maalaala Mo Kaya"...

Anyways, while all these were happening, my gramps started a new family in Manila (my mom and aunts were left in Davao and Cotabato). He had 1 daughter with my step-lola. All in all, he had 4 daughters.

I don't have any ill feelings with my gramps at all. My mom had forgiven him and she loves him regardless of what happened. If things were any different, my mom wouldn't be where and who she is now and maybe I wouldn't be where and who I am now. Plus, I soooo love my step aunt, she's my favorite tita (aunt) of all!

My mom is actually relieved that finally, my gramps is already at peace.

To my gramps, I'm so sorry that we were not able to come and see you before you go. Please know that you were loved by all of us. We know that you had fulfilled your purpose here on earth and you're now at peace in God's loving arms.

Goodbye gramps. We will miss you.
