Why I'm Not Getting An iPhone

Ok, with just a few hours away from the most anticipated public release of THE iPhone... in the midst of all the hype and the big brouhaha, a good friend of mine sent me this cool article that made me think twice. Well, not that I even considered buying the first generation (only the rich and mighty could afford that smartphone... and oh, some eager-beavers too, ha!) but you know, I'm still curious what's up with all the publicity.

Why I'm Not Getting an iPhone
by Gina Hughes
Tech Diva

The iPhone hype is so intense right now, I think people will be buying this phone based on hype alone. I mean, is the phone really that great? Our duty is to keep you informed regarding details we come across, so the more I read about the iPhone, the less I want it.

At a glance, the device looks fantastic, features sound fun, and there's no doubt this phone is the "it" phone this year. But realistically, would you pay $500-$600 for any other phone? Like many of you, I'm still debating whether to buy an iPhone or not, so I've compiled a list of cons (since the pros are obvious) just to give myself a reality-check come Friday night.

Price/Storage: Probably the biggest reason to wait is the price. The iPhone will retail in stores for $500 (4GB) and $600 (8GB) — AND you still have to sign a new two-year agreement. Don't expect this phone to replace your iPod either. The top-of-the-line $600, 8GB iPhone only holds 2,000 songs, and only a handful of videos and full-length movies. I also don't understand why you have to buy the iPhone at full price, and still sign a two-year contract. You could easily get a comparable phone actually running on a 3G network like a Treo 750 for $199 with a two-year contract, or an 80GB video iPod for almost half the price.

Plans: What's really bothering me about this is AT&T is playing into all this hype too, forgetting about its customers. I called AT&T today to find out more details about switching carriers, and the rep was clueless. Come on guys, we needed pricing details about a month before the phone went on sale so we could estimate costs. Why is the company being so secretive? We know the phone is launching on Friday, and we know what it does. So why did it wait so long to reveal service plans? At least now we know getting an iPhone isn't going to be cheap. Chris Null outlined the cost of each service plan, the cheapest plan being $60/mo for 450 minutes. He says that in two years, you'll end up paying close to $2,000 for service alone. Plus there is that $36 activation fee, and a two-year contract on top of that. Those who already have an AT&T account can expect to pay an additional $20-$30 for the "iPhone plan" which includes Visual Voicemail, 200 SMS text messages, and unlimited data since there is no voice-only plan. And if you think you can get the iPhone to use without service, think again. Apple's web site says a two-year agreement is required for iPhone activation including iPod features.

Network: Surprisingly, the iPhone does not run on a third-generation (3G) network, instead it runs on the slower EDGE network. Forbes thinks Apple opted for the slower network because AT&T's EDGE coverage spans across 13,000 cities and towns nationwide, compared with only 165 major U.S metro areas that have 3G coverage. It also brings up another excellent point. Since 3G devices are interchangeable between faster and slower networks, why did Apple still choose EDGE? Other AT&T smartphones like Samsung's BlackJack and Treo 750 run on 3G, and for what I understand AT&T is slowing moving away from EDGE. So perhaps a second- or third-generation iPhone will have 3G capability. And while the iPhone may have Wi-Fi capabilities, realistically, looking for a hotspot when you're out can be a challenge, unless you pay an extra $10 for T-Mobile access at Starbucks.

First Generation: A geek's rule of thumb is to never get a first generation gadget. Apple is one of the few companies that revamps its products at such a quick pace, that in this case, they actually make it quite bearable to wait for the second revision. Look at all the improvements they've made on iPods and MacBooks. It may seem like waiting for a new iPhone will be an eternity, but I bet it'll be a matter of months before we see a better, faster version.

Long Lines: I love technology as much as the next guy, but no gadget is worth standing in line days in advance for, not even the iPhone. People have already started to line up, and some are even betting real money that someone will get trampled. I would add getting shot at, beaten, mugged, and possibly being hospitalized to the list.
On top of all the above reasons, there's still some doubts about about the lack of keyboard, inability to sync with corporate internal email systems, and battery life. So lets get this straight. We're expected to pay for an overpriced phone, an expensive service plan, sign a new two-year contract, and still wait in line hoping to get one? No thanks.

Still getting an iPhone? Why or Why not?

I Heart U

Setting: Husband comes home from work. Wife opens the door. Husband hands over an empty bag of chips to the wife.

Hubby: "I got this for you, open it" - (kissed the wife)

Wifey: "Huh, what's this? It looks empty" - (with a perplexed look)

Hubby: "Just open it..."

Wifey: (Smiling as she saw what's in it)

Hubby: "I was eating chips during breaktime and I saw this. I thought I wouldn't want to eat it cuz I want you to have it"

Wifey: "Awwww.... thanks sweeps. I heart you"

So, wondering what's in it? Soooo corny but I find it super sweet of him, heheeeee :o)

Good thing I didn't like potato chips in general, moreso Jalapeno flavored ones. Or else, I would have ended up munching the thing. Haha. Goodness, my husband is full of corn but he just know me too well - melted me right away! Suuuwwweeeeeet!

Dirty Dog Wash Day!

It's Saturday morning and we had to force our butts to get up early. Skye and Chewy are going to the 2nd Annual Dirty Dog Wash Day! Time to socialize with other stinky dogs and mutts, hahaha!

I had Skye with me and hubby had Chewy. I went to the registration table to sign the kids up for a bath. Hubby and Chewy were behind us. The lady on the table noticed Chewy coming close and she babbled "Wow, look at that big one coming!". I was like, "Yeah, hahaha, it's mine as well". She just smiled at me as I gave her our "donation".

It's funny I didnt expect that much people. There's even some TV coverage, haha, aint it cool?

Doggie treats were all over and there's some complimentary snacks for their humans as well, hahaa! They were also selling doggie accessories and all. We're not fans of those cuz our kids are both on the bigger side, so none of those would actually fit them. Chewy sometimes get to wear sweeps' shirt and it fits him pretty well. Yeah, that's how huge he is!

Anyhoo, when we went to the area where they wash the dogs, Chewy, being next in line was throwing some tantrums. I guess he's scared and confused what's going on with all these people and dogs. He barked at some of the volunteers who wash the dogs - not growled, just barked to scare them off. I guess he didn't want any wash nor he didnt want any stranger touching him at that point. He ended up not being washed :o( That means I gotta give him a bath tomorrow on my own. Bummer!

Skye on the other hand, did pretty well. She was scared to death at the beginning and didnt want to jump in the tub. But I kept on praising her and I was petting her the whole time while the 2 volunteers gave her a refreshing bath! I'm so proud of her, haha.

Here are some photos I took. It's kinda hard since I had Skye with me. I should have taken more pics but I just didnt get a chance to roam around. Well at least next year, we know what to expect. Heehee.

Losing Someone We Love

Last night we visited a good friend to bring her some plants that our team from work got for her. She just lost her dad. A week before Father's Day, he passed away. She's one super sweet friend of mine and even if I didn't know exactly how to make it easy for her. I just want to be there for her and give her a hug and make her feel that a lot of us loves her.

She's a strong gal. I really admire her faith in the Lord and her courage to live one day at a time. She's super close to her daddy and my heart is breaking everytime I see her wanting to cry.

I can't imagine how difficult it is to lose someone you dearly love. This is actually my greatest fear ever. I'd rather be the one to leave this world first before anyone I care about does. I don't think I can handle such pain endured by the longing and emptiness of being left behind. Life wouldn't just be the same.

I've lost pets, I broke up with ex's. They all hurt bigtime, but time was able to help me heal. But there's not even a point of comparison to losing someone who have been a part of your life ever since you were born in this world. The thought that you wouldn't be able to physically see and touch them...

I am sooo lucky and blessed that my family's still complete. I couldn't imagine my world without them...

All my respect and prayers go to the rest who managed to conquer the world who survived their loved ones.

Lifehouse & Goo Goo Dolls Tour 2007

Friday night = Date night.

Last Friday was one of the most anticipated date nights we've had -- seeing Lifehouse again after almost 2 years! Last time they came over was July 2005 in a smaller theater. Sweeps and I were actually just in front of the stage, super close I could almost reach on their shoes! When one of the guys from their group threw his guitar's pick to the audience, it fell off on my feet and we kept it as a keepsake, of course!

Goo Goo Dolls were good too, they were the main guys of the night (well, the tour's name is Goo Goo Dolls with Lifehouse, so what do we expect, right?)

They performed around 9pm-ish and it ended around 11pm-ish. Lifehouse sang maybe less than 10 songs earlier in the show, mostly from their new album that would be released tomorrow. We really got the tickets to see Lifehouse, so after they performed, we just kinda made the most out of the time that Goo Goo Dolls were performing. They did good, don't get me wrong, but the energy and excitement we had compared to when Lifehouse was on the stage was just so-so. But overall, it's really worth it!! I was totally amazed as I just used to see these guys from Meg Ryan & Nicolas Cage's movie soundtrack's video (City of Angels) like 10 years ago or something and last Friday, they were just there, right in front of me- in the flesh!!! Yes, they were the same group who sang "Iris" which for me, is one of the most "kilig" love songs ever.

On big shows like these, they usually don't allow cameras (video & stills) to be taken inside. It's good though that we took the risk of bringing our small digicam with built in video cam (duh, like as if there are models that exist without video cams these days??!!) They checked my purse and they didn't complain, so I got it in! Too bad we didnt have enough memory space left to take Goo Good Dolls in action, sweeps took a lot of video on the early part when LH was on the stage.

Here are some Goo Goo Dolls pics.

Here's the LH Tour 2007 shirt we got, sooo neat!!! :o)

I also uploaded one of Lifehouse's perfomance that we were able to record. It's embarrassing though as I can hear myself singing & screaming in the background, hahah - yeah, don't laugh ok? You'd hear me more somewhere at the end of the video. We were having such a great time, I didnt care if I was a lousy singer. Sweeps was doing the recording while he was sitted so you could see people passing. Too bad they didn't sing our "song", sweeps was saving the memory space for it. Ended up recording "Hanging By A Moment" instead.

This song is one of our favorites. When we were just "hanging out" I remembered sweeps would text me a part of the lyrics of some random songs and this was one of them.

Anyways, here it goes.

HANGING BY A MOMENT

desperate for changing
starving for truth
closer to where I started
chasing after you

I'm falling even more in love with you
letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

forgetting all I'm lacking
completely incomplete
I'll take your invitation
you take all of me now

I'm falling even more in love with you
letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
and I don't know what I'm diving into
just hanging by a moment here with you

there's nothing else to lose
there's nothing else to find
there's nothing in the world
that could change my mind
there is nothing else
there is nothing else
there is nothing else

desperate for changing
starving for truth
closer to where I started
chasing after you

I'm falling even more in love with you
letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
and I don't know what I'm diving into
just hanging by a moment here with you
just hanging by a moment
hanging by a moment
hanging by a moment
hanging by a moment here with you

For the Hopeless Romantics in this World

Kilig!!! Haaaay, nothing beats the feeling of being in love... hahaa :o) To all of us --- people in love all over the world, cheers!!

Artist: Shawn Colvin Lyrics
Song: When You Know

When you know that you know who you love, you can't deny it.
Or go back, or give up, or pretend that you don't buy it.
When it's clear this time you've found the one, you'll never let him go
Cos you know and you know that you know.

When you feel in your skin in your bones and the hollow
Of your heart, there's no way you can wait till tomorrow.
When there isn't any doubt about it once you come this close
Cos you know and you know that you know.

You can feel love's around you like the sky 'round blue
This is how love has found you, now you know what to do.

When you know that you know who you need, you can't deny it.
Or go back, or give up, or pretend that you don't buy it.
When it's clear this time you've found the one, you'll never let him go
Cos you know and you know that you know.

And it's time you come in from the cold.
Haaa...
And you know that you know.

"Without passion, what's the sense?"

I read this quote from somewhere and ever since it just got stuck into my head. I thought, hmmm, I could definitely use this quote as a reminder to myself that life is too short to be wasted on things that didn't matter to me as much. What am I really so passionate about?

With every twist and turns that I took, every mistake, every risk, I found myself realizing that all things are supposed to happen as they were intended to happen. Back in 2002, the product I was supporting for 3 yrs didn't get to startup in the Philippines, instead, we had to do the start-up in Penang, Malaysia. There, I get to meet these guys from Intel Philippines who were also relocated in Penang. I get to hangout with these guys (who I still consider my very very dear friends to this moment). I became "one of the guys". I learned how to appreciate gadgets, cameras, videos, etc etc. Until one day, I found myself liking... errrr... loving video editing. I'm really super thankful for "The Pilyos Inc" cuz without them, I wouldn't have tapped into this hidden passion of mine. These guys had so much impact to my life that they could ever realize. Thanks guys, you know who you are :o)

I didn't really get into it until just recently, when hubby gave me my iMac, that's when I kinda started giving it some time and a little focus. I mean, i used to just use simple no-brainer softwares like Photodex & Windows Movie Maker, hahaha :o)

Anyways, yesterday was Ralph's wedding. For the past several weeks, I've been trying to finish this video I wanted to give him as my wedding gift to him so he could surprise his wife-to-be. When I showed him this video last Thursday, he was super happy and amazed and thankful that he hugged me as he was really touched by it. It felt dang good - being able to connect to other people's emotions through something I did that didnt even felt like work for me! I know this is something I could do for the rest of my life. After several weeks of sleepless nights, it's all worth it... yep, it's all worth it.

So, just want to share the photomontage i did for them. It looks a bit amateur-ish, but it's pure labor of love so I'm proud of it.

Oh, I wouldnt have done this without the patience of my ever loving hubby, who stayed up with me during those late hours to encourage me when I was losing my patience on getting it to work. He was the one who did the sound effects on this video :o) Thanks sweeps!

Anyhoo, here you go. Sorry it's a bit pixelated (duh, is that even a word?) since it was compressed for easy web upload :o)

Things Happen For A Reason

I know I know... sounds too cliche isn't it? I just can't help to write something about it since it's timely for a few people I know. I might be able to share a bit of hope for those who might bump into my blog who share similar situation.

A good friend of mine, HN, at this very moment, is on his way back to Malaysia after his 3-month stint here in Chandler. He's really really sad because he is leaving behind the love of his life, H. Sounds familiar for some reason :o)

Anyhoo, when HN came here, he was single and unattached. H was seeing another guy. HN & H were friends waaaaaay back when both of them were in the Phils. They've been bf/gf since their elementary days though HN was in Manila and H was in Mindanao. Well, long distance relationships back then were kinda hard to maintain (no cell phones, no emails, no video chats, no skype, just pretty much phone & snail mail). So go figure. Yep, they've already broken up like 9 yrs ago and moved on. HN got a job offer in Malaysia & H migrated to the States.

Both of them kept in touch though. So whenever HN comes over to the States, he would find time to visit H and her family in Sacramento. So his short trip here in Chandler for this year is not an excemption. One weekend, HN decided to visit H & her family again and drove from Chandler to Sacramento (crazy guy!) When he came back to Chandler, he has a different glow on his face. He looked really really happy. Then he told me the story.

He said that for some reason he can't explain, there were just sparks all over and it just felt soooo right this time. It hit him so hard that he realized he finally found what he's looking for. H is his "home". No one else even come close. That was sometime first week of April.

He said now he knows the reason why he was sent here in the States for some training - he found his way back to H. It was not part of his plan, it just happened. He was trying to analyze how come they didnt get back together last year when he still goes over there to visit her and her family. Then he realized that back then, he didn't know how he could come back here since he was carrying an L1 visa which would expire when he's done with his project. For some reason this time, the visa stamp he got was a 10-yr multiple entry (another sign?). So he can come back anytime he wants.

He said he always felt sooo miserable whenever he had to leave her behind ever since they were younger. But he knows this time it's different now that he has a little more control- time to end their agony. Now that coming back here is no longer a hindrance, he already has plans to fly back this August and on December. And yes, they're getting married next year. We're soooo happy for them!!! After only 3 months of being "official bf/gf" they're already getting married!!!

One classic example that proved my theory again ---- when guys are super sure that they already found the right girl, they wouldn't have to wait for ages to marry her. My hubby & I have only known each other for like, 8 months when he proposed. One of my bestfriend's parents only knew each other for a week (!!!!!!!!) - and yes, they're still happily married after 35 years! So, I'm not really a fan of long engagements. Been there, done that, didn't work, waste of time.

Did I just digress? Hahah.

Anyhoo, there are times when we have tons of questions in our mind and we're trying to figure out why things are happening to us. Well, based on my personal experience, answers not always come during the time that we're looking for them. God would let us go through the journey and only by doing so, we'd find the answers we've been looking for. He has a grand plan for us that our reasoning is way too limited- God's master plan is waaay beyond human reason. In time we'd understand why.

Not too long ago, I had gazzillions of questions myself - why this, why that? Now I know why. I am thankful to Him that He lead me to where I am right now.

If you're in a situation that you're still trying to find answers to, well my friend, have faith and pray hard. God is good and in His time, you'd get your answer, afterall, things happen for a reason.
